Cryptocurrencies have garnered much fascination since their inception. Most recently this preoccupation with cryptocurrency and the quickly evolving crypto industry may be seen with the likes of celebrities, many of whom are eager to associate themselves with cryptocurrency.

Celebrity Attention

From as early as 2014 cryptocurrencies have caught the attention of celebrities. This is evident by the first single “Best B#$*h” released by the 77-year-old white rapper dubbed “Bitcoin”. In March 2017, Young Dirty announced his plan to launch a cryptocurrency called “Dirty Coin”. The token of this cryptocurrency which would be “ODB” an apparent abbreviation of the pseudonym of his father, the late Wu-Tang Clan member Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

May of 2018 saw rapper Snoop Dogg scheduled to perform at the XRP Community Night as part of the first New York Blockchain Weekend. While in August 2018, Eminem released his latest album entitled “Kamikaze” which featured a reference to cryptocurrency. The track “Not Alike” featuring a guest appearance from rapper Royce Da 5’9” states “remember everybody used to bite nickel, now everybody doing bitcoin”. This is an apparent criticism of the sudden trend by celebrities who seek to associate themselves with cryptocurrency.

Soulja Boy’s Latest Single

Rapper Soulja Boy, the former Grammy and Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards nominee, has apparently become the latest in a long line of celebrities to connect themselves with cryptocurrency. In his single release on 3 October 2018 entitled “Bitcoin” Soulja Boy boast of the wealth he has supposedly accumulated through cryptocurrency investments.

In the track Soulja Boy purports to have amassed a vast fortune through bitcoin. The chorus of the track states that Soulja Boy has “made 100 racks off of bitcoin”. By this statement and according to Urbandictionary, which equates 1 rack to be equal to $1,000 USD, Soulja Boy is said to have realized a return of $100,000 on his bitcoin investment.

The chorus then confoundingly goes on to state that Soulja Boy “spent $6,000 on the bitcoin,” and that “he spent $6,000 on a bitcoin”. In contrast to his earlier assertion, this statement proposed that Soulja Boy’s entire cryptocurrency portfolio comprised a single BTC purchased for $6,000 USD. If this were the case it is unlikely that Soulja Boy ever made 100 “racks” off of bitcoin. Had Soulja Boy sold his bitcoin at the all-time high BTC enjoyed during December 2017, the most he could have made would be roughly 10.4 “racks”.

The incongruent nature of the track continues with Soulja Boy stating that he regularly transfers cryptocurrencies via Paypal “send it [bitcoin] through Paypal”. This is evidently an inaccuracy as Paypal has never provided support for cryptocurrencies. What Soulja Boy may be referring to is P2P trades, conducted via a site such as Localbitcoins by using Paypal.

Despite the nature of Soulja Boy’s Bitcoin single, it is evident that celebrities are increasingly attempting to associate themselves with cryptocurrencies.
