By Streaming giant Twitch has removed its only supported processor of cryptocurrency payments, BitPay from its list of payment options.
The streaming giant did not make any announcement as to the removal of the crypto payment gateway, and the departure was first noticed and posted on Reddit.
Even though mainstream adoption by vendors has been a core goal of Bitcoin (BTC) during the last two years, it’s common knowledge that more vendors are dropping the cryptocurrency as a payment option. Many argue that this could rampant removal of the crypto option could be attributed to Steam removing Bitcoin as a payment option due to high fees in December 2017. Since then, the number of platforms accepting BTC has stagnated.
Twitch is the latest of these companies to remove the support of crypto payments. Without any warning or prior announcement, Twitch quietly removed BitPay from its options for payments.
Via BitPay, users were previously able to make payments with either Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
The news was first uncovered on the Bitcoin Cash subreddit. In addition to frustration at the option being removed, many users also expressed irritation with the fact that they were not even aware that Bitcoin or Bitcoin Cash were options for payment on the streaming service. The choice of using BitPay was basically invisible to many crypto enthusiasts due to poor promotion.
Streamlabs seems to be in the same boat. Whereas before, users could receive crypto donations via linked Coinbase accounts, the option has since been completely removed. Since both platforms have removed crypto payments at the same time, the move definitely seems distinctly intentional.
Streamers will still be able to request crypto donations the old-fashioned way, by displaying their wallet addresses but there are longer any means to pay for subscriptions with digital assets.
