One of the most interesting figures within the cryptocurrency industry is undoubtedly Craig Wright, who has been at the centre of multiple controversies in the last few years. One of the most prominent of these is his consistent claim of being Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of bitcoin, which has earned him criticism from many within the industry and even got his flagship token bitcoin SV delisted from several prominent exchanges in the last few months.
Currently, he is in the middle of a lawsuit against the estate of David Kleinman, a late scientist whose estate claims that write stole billions of dollars worth of bitcoin from him following his death a few years ago. The case itself has been rather interesting but took a new turn as a new letter was filed in the federal courthouse on July 22, 2019.
Who is Satoshi Nakomoto?
The letter in the case was filed by a man named Debo Jurgen Etienne Guido who claims that he is Satoshi Nakamoto and this was addressed to Bruce Reinhart, who is the judge overseeing the current trial.
“I hereby testify, by written letter — I am the genuine and only originator/creator of the genesis block of the Bitcoin blockchain. I used the handle Satoshi Nakamoto and mail Satoshin@GMX.com to write and publish the whitepaper bitcoin,” the letter says.
The case in question began in February 2018 when the estate of David Kleinman sued Wright and it was eventually brought before the United States District Court of the Southern District of Florida and wright was sued for $5 billion. Earlier in July 2019, Craig Wright was exposed in court for having presented fake documents which he claimed were evidence that he held a trust deed in the estate. However, upon examination of the metadata, it was shown that the document made use of a Microsoft font that was copyrighted in 2015 meaning the document could not be from 2012 as claimed.
Wright has been ordered to submit a list of all his early bitcoin addresses but he has claimed that he cannot do so as the data cannot be easily retrieved because he shared some critical components for accessing the funds and wallets with Kleinman before he passed away.
With this new development and letter, it is further complicated just who is or is not Satoshi Nakamoto and we are no closer to finding out.
