Binance Charity, a non-profit organization and the philanthropic part of world’s largest crypto exchange Binance, has started a campaign to support the victims of the Hurricane Dorian.

The worst hurricane that hit the Bahamas

The hurricane Dorian has been devastating and has caused a lot of damage to the Caribbean and the coastal areas of the United States. At present, it is travelling towards Canada. According to reports by the Red Cross society, more than 400,000 people are now in the need for basic amenities like food, water and medical support. Around 13000 homes have been destroyed in the Bahamas where the hurricane had the greatest impact. Around 40 people have been reported dead as of September 5, 2019. Dorian is considered one of the strongest hurricanes that have hit the land and is rated the worst storm to date to hit the Bahamas. Health Minister Duane Sands, in an interview with local news publication The Nassau Guardian said:

“I believe the number will be staggering. I have never lived through anything like this and I don’t want to live through anything like this again.”

The hurricane is bound to hit the states of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia and millions of people are expected to be affected. The total damage caused in the affected areas is still being accounted for.

Binance Charity – disaster relief through crypto and blockchain

Lending a helping hand, Binance Charity has now started accepting donations on their campaign website from 5th September. As per the website, donations are accepted in Bitcoin (BTC), Binance Coin (BNB) and XRP. The accumulated funds will be distributed to the hurricane relief project after completion of the campaign. At the time of writing, a total of 15 donations have been recorded which amounts to 0.5590 BTC, which at present is valued at $5870.55 USD. The funds haven’t been deployed yet.

Binance Charity also states that all the donations and disbursements are recorded on the blockchain and is completely transparent and viewable by anyone. Apart from donating, you can also join the cause by getting in touch with the Blockchain foundation team on the non-profit’s website.

Crypto and Philanthropy

The Crypto industry is steadily being a part of philanthropic and charitable efforts. All around the word various charitable organizations like the Red Cross are using cryptocurrencies to make donations a lot easier while reaching out to a more global audience. As reported earlier, The Rainforest Foundation US, a New York-based, non-profit NGO, has recently reached out to the entire crypto community asking for help to fight the growing amount of deforestation and the threat of forest fires in Brazil. This only goes to show how cryptocurrencies are being adopted in real-world scenarios.
