Black Hole is a new application that uses blockchain technology to offer file transfer services. The app uses Blockstack network to enable users to log in, store and transfer files to other people. The system is solely blockchain-based, and the services come free.

Once a user uploads a file, the file is encrypted and the data generated divided and shared among other Blockstack users. The process ensures that the user’s files and personal data are private and not even Black Hole has access to the data. The only public thing is the user name which can be seen by other Black Hole users.

According to the official post, the process of uploading files on the platform is straightforward. It involves first signing up on the platform or if already signed up, logging into Blackhole.run. The second step entails clicking on the upload file icon, choosing the file to be uploaded and waiting for the upload to complete.

Once complete, a private download link automatically generates. The generated link does not expire and has no restrictions on the number of times it can be downloaded. Further, only persons with the generated link that can access and download the files.

Black hole limited by file size

The only shortcoming of the Block hole application is that it limits the size of files uploaded. When compared to other file transfer services such as Dropbox Transfer, the size of data that can be uploaded is way too low. Black Hole’s free version limits uploads to 512MB in comparison to Dropbox transfer free versions that have a 2GB limit. However, the application’s next update is likely to fill the gap as it is reported to have an 8 GB limit.

The advantages resulting due to Black Hole’s use of the blockchain technology overshadows its size limitation. The application provides unlimited storage to its users. Its generated download links never expire. Further, the application can be accessed from any browser and files can be uploaded. The links are accessible to users within and outside the platform. The user only needs to have access to the link. However, a user must sign in to the platform to upload or send files.

Notably, the platform has both web client and windows app versions. Both versions have all the above features.  However, the Windows app version has additional features. These features include; transfer history, option to delete and disable links of files uploaded and grants password protection to folders according to the user’s preference.
