The uses for blockchain technology are almost endless. The latest industry to seek out the use of blockchain is the dairy farm industry in the US. The Dairy Farmers Of America or DFA announced on Tuesday that they are working towards increasing their supply chain transparency by tracking milk products using blockchain technology developed by a food tech startup known as Ripe.io.

The goal of the organisation is to increase the customer trust in their products. The plan is to ensure that consumers are able to track products they purchase back to their point of origin.

The DFA went on to state, in a press release, that they will trial the blockchain technology but they do not have a specific product in mind yet according to vice president of sustainability and member services – David Darr.

He went on to state: “consumers today want to know where their food comes from and blockchain technology, like ripe.io, gives consumers real-time data, which can really help increase trust and confidence about food production from start to finish.”

David also added:

“We know that there’s a lot of application for blockchain technology within agriculture, and we ultimately want to help our dairy farmers be on the forefront … For now, our goal is to evaluate the technology and explore how it might benefit our supply chain.”

This news comes hot on the heels after Walmart announced that they would implement blockchain technology to store suppliers of leafy green products provenance on a platform developed in partnership with IBM

This was done in a response to a recent E.coli scare, as a result, Walmart seeks to create end-to-end traceability. With this in place, Walmart will have the resources to efficiently trace potential disease outbreaks back to the source and help customers determine if they’re at risk.

While the DFA hasn’t announced the full extent of their plan, Walmart seeks to have all their suppliers run the platform in mainstream production by next year September. Will this change for the DFA? If Walmarts implementation goes well, the DFA could follow suit along with many other agricultural industries.
