On 22 October 2019, Opera issued a press release announcing that the web browser will support secure bitcoin (BTC) and TRON payments on its mobile browser app.

Opera, which has over 350 million users, will enable them to send and receive bitcoins from the browser directly. Opera will also allow its customers to use their cryptocurrency funds to buy goods and services from websites that offer e-commerce services.

The announcement also stated that Opera users can now add a BTC or TRON (TRX) card into the new built-in crypto wallet to manage their accounts. Opera’s head of crypto, Charles Hamel, stated:

“We believe that opening our browser to more blockchains, including Bitcoin, is the logical next step to making our solution more relevant to anyone who has a Bitcoin crypto wallet and would like to do things with their cryptocurrencies beyond just keeping them in an account.”

Integration with TRON DApp Network

Opera’s browser market share currently stands at 3% as the company continues to experiment with web three integration ideas. The opera team decided to integrated TRON TRX as well as the TRON DApp network as a move to increase the access of decentralized apps globally.

TRON founder and BitTorrent CEO Justin Sun Stated:

“Opera is one of the most important software companies in the world. They are bringing security privacy and dynamic cryptocurrency capabilities to hundreds of millions of users. We are proud to connect the largest active blockchain ecosystem to the best web browser ever built. “

Opera’s Expansion into Digital Currency

The first cryptocurrency that was availed for purchase is Ether (ETH) by Ethereum. Opera made the announcement in February 2019. In July 2019, Opera released features that enabled android opera users to send and receive BTC, TRC-10, and TRC standard tokens. The browsers also allowed other webpages to request and receive users’ addresses to complete BTC transactions.
