The latest Samsung Galaxy, the S10 will be launched with a built-in Ethereum crypto wallet with Bitcoin support said to be implemented at a later stage.
This news comes from a report courtesy of CoinDesk Korea with the publication also revealing that the flagship smartphone will support dApps.
Only Ethereum Support For Now:
Just last month, Samsung revealed its latest premium handset, the Galaxy S10 which is set to feature built-in cryptocurrency features. The Korean tech giant announced last week that the pre-orders have begun and Samsung fans are able to put in their orders for the smartphone. Following the pre-order announcement, a few lucky users were able to get their hands on the device and had the privilege of looking into the features.
Notably, it was discovered that the S10’s crypto wallet only supports ERC-20 tokens and this means that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are not supported at this stage.
dApps Support:
Currently, the Samsung S10 wallet application supports the following four decentralized apps (dApps): Enjin – a crypto gaming app, Cosmee – a beauty community, the collectable crypto app – CryptoKitties and CoinDuck a crypto merchant payments service.
The wallet app can only be downloaded from the Galaxy S10 via the Samsung Galaxy Store. Samsung has stated that they will expand this service to other devices and cryptocurrencies in the future.
The Samsung Wallet will be utilised through another app – the Blockchain Keystore which was announced earlier this year shortly after Samsung first confirmed that it will offer private crypto key storage on the device. The Blockchain Keystore features three key features: payments to merchants, digital signatures and cryptocurrency storage and transfers.
Via the supported CoinDuck dApp, users can make payments to merchants. Users only need to enter the amount to be paid, scan a QR code by providing the online or offline merchant wallet address, press the accept button and the payment will be made via the Samsung Wallet. Notably, CoinDuck currently also only supports ethereum (ETH).
CoinDuck’s parent company, Chain Partners stated:
“It was inconvenient to copy the address of the merchant’s wallet and paste it into the personal wallet. We have dramatically improved the usability of CoinDuck and Samsung Blockchain Wallet.”
This marks the first time that Samsung is dipping its toes into the cryptocurrency and blockchain well and its a move that could see the company attracting a new target market, the cryptocurrency community.
