The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is on the hunt to recruit a “crypto specialist” attorney advisor.
As per a job posting on USAJobs, an official government jobs portal, the SEC’s Division of Trading and Markets has plans to hire the new legal counsel to create a “comprehensive plan” to address crypto and digital asset securities.
One of the core responsibilities of the new recruit would be to apply their “knowledge of federal securities laws to digital asset securities and crypto matters, i.e., broker-dealer, exchange, clearing agency and transfer registrations, exchange product applications, sales and trading practices, etc.”
The successful candidate would also serve as the regulatory body’s lead representative in the SEC’s FinTech Working Group as we as liaison to the Financial Stability Oversight Council’s (FSOC’s) Digital Assets Working Group.
Furthermore, the new recruit will also serve as the SEC’s point of contact for the U.S and international regulators, market participants and of course the public as per the job posting specifications.
With regards to the basic requirements for the position, all applicants have to possess a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. Applicants also need to be active members of the Federal Bar Association and be in “good standing.”
Furthermore, applicants need to have 4 years of post J.D work experience as practising attorneys with core focuses in interpreting and applying laws governing the securities arena, in particular, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, among other regulative areas.
Initially, the role will offer a candidate a two-year period with a salary in the range of $144,850–$238,787 a year. The closing date for applications is April 12th.
This job posting is significant as it marks another notable step taken by the SEC’s goals of defining the many grey areas found within cryptocurrency industry in the U.S. Just last June, the agency recruited it’s first ever “crypto czar” Valerie Szczepanik, as associate director of the Division of Corporation Finance and senior advisor for digital assets and innovation.
