The United States Air Force (USAF) has signed a data management contract with Constellation Network Inc. The contract is to help the defence forces in data handling and management. According to the press release published on August 27, the Blockchain technology company, which is based in San Francisco, is set to use the Distributed Ledger Technology to secure and manage the data.
Reportedly, the contract authorizes the Blockchain firm to automate the management of the Armed Forces big data. The company is set to achieve by providing decentralized encrypted security to the forces data pipelines, creating audit trails and live overview of the status of the source of any data. While elaborating on the contract, the Vice President of Business Development at Constellation Network Inc., Benjamin Diggles, stated:
“The USAF has a multitude of data sources like drones, planes and satellites that need to be secured. Clean and consolidated data that can be queried instantly is a big need within the defense apparatus”
Specifically, the San Francisco based company is to use Blockchain technology to securely unlock USAF’s Multi-Domain Command and Control (MDC2). The MDC2 basically is made up of traditionally siloed and non-accessible data and data sources. Through securely unlocking the non-accessible data and data sources, the company will enable a downstream and upstream flow of encrypted data. This will result in the building of systems between creation, storage and management of data for future decision making.
The contract comes at the backdrop of the realization that the armed forces multi-domain, different data service providers and stakeholders are complicated and disconnected. As a result of the disconnection and lack of coordination, the data generated by the stakeholders and the domains are either inaccessible when needed or would require a lot of manpower to retrieve. Notably, data management is not the first challenge that the United States Air Force has turned to Blockchain technology to help solve. Just a few days ago, the Air Force published a news release to the effect that it had identified SIMBA Chain to secure its supply chain. SIMBA Chain is a smart contract start-up that develops different applications using the blockchain technology.
